They released the D40 on November 2006 with a 6MP CCD sensor.

Four months later, they released a replacement model for it called the D40X with a 10MP CCD sensor.

I really sympathize with those people who have bought the D40 recently only to hear of this news. The D40 probably has the shortest product life cycle ever for a DSLR which is only 4 months. I think it was a mistake for Nikon to release another 6MP DSLR when the older 6MP D50 was still around. They should have released the D40 with the 10MP CCD sensor instead. I believe one of the reasons for the release of the D40X is to keep up with the intense DSLR competition. Almost all the manufacturers have released new DSLRs with sensors having a minimum of 10MP.
